William Wallace Monument

Last week we took my sister and her family to see the William Wallace Monument. It is a gorgeous structure overlooking the scene of Scotland's victory at The Battle of Stirling Bridge. This is a place where you can touch and feel history as you follow the story of Sir William Wallace, Guardian of Scotland.

We bought our tickets and started the 15 min hike up the mountain. We didn't take the stroller and Sebastian did such a great job all the way up! It was muddy and humid, but a lovely walk just the same. Once we finally made it to the monument we were greeted by breathtaking scenery of Scotland. I could have sat up there all day if it wasn't for an over active toddler pulling me every which way.

Once we caught our breath we started up the stairs. Oh my were there stairs! Not just any stairs either. They were narrow, made of stone, and spiralled up for 246 steps. It was a doozy. Luckily there were rooms to stop and catch our breath while we learned some history. LD was carrying Sebastian up the stairs the whole way and that wasn't exactly fun.

When we finally reached the top it was very windy. It actually felt amazing after our climb! I've not seen anything so beautiful in awhile.

  1. I love the Wallace monument! I've been there twice, once the first time Brian brought me to Scotland, and once when we brought my kids here for a vacation.

The second time there was a costumed guide of sorts who talked about the history of the battle, and some background of why they were fighting. My very American kids got a lot out of that part.

My son was amazed to see the sword and couldn't quite wrap his head around the fact that it was the actual sword he used.

It's a great spot to bring family to visit, and I hope I can bring my mom there some day. From the top you can see the little town of Alva, where her great-great grandparents lived.

    1. This was my first time. I didn't take many pictures because I was trying to keep Sebastian from jumping off! Ha!! But, I can not wait to go back. It is so gorgeous and the history is fascinating!

  2. It is such a beautiful area of Scotland, but yes, the stairs are quite a feat and very claustrophobic. I'm a bit scared of heights so the windy-ness at the top freaked me out and detracted from my views since I refused to leave the middle of the monument:) You took some great pictures!

    1. The wind was wild at the top! I wouldn't let my son leave the middle of the monument. I was scared he'd just run away or jump off the side. Freaked me out!! But, I loved it!
